How Does Running Affect Your Oral Health? Dental Tips for Athletes

451855347It’s common knowledge that exercising regularly is essential for a healthy body and mind, but do you know how your trips to the gym are affecting the health of your smile? The link between your teeth and your fitness regimen may not be immediately apparent, but a recent study published in a Scandinavian scientific journal uncovered an important relationship that is of particular interest to athletes. At Ted R. Hume, III, DDS in Dallas, TX, Dr. Ted Hume and his team are always searching for new ways to help our patients. We’d like to take this opportunity to share the findings of this study in hopes that it will be useful in your journey toward optimal oral health.

Exercise and Tooth Decay: Why Runners Have More Cavities

Previously conducted studies on the subject of oral health in athletes discovered that men and women who ran regularly suffered from a higher incidence of tooth decay as compared to their non-athletic counterparts. While a diet high in carbohydrates (think sports drinks and energy bars) had already been revealed as a major cause of cavities in athletes, the researchers found something new in this study. It was the saliva collected from the participants that really brought the surprising results.

Saliva samples were taken from two groups: non-athletes and regular runners. When both groups were at rest, their samples showed no difference. When the athletes were sent out on a strenuous run, however, the environment in their mouths changed. Saliva production was diminished as they ran, putting their teeth and gums at risk for decay and disease. Choosing carbonated or sugary refreshments following the run made matters worse, eroding tooth enamel at a faster rate than would normally occur. The results of the study point toward more stringent preventive dental care for men and women who work out often, particularly runners.

Introducing a Better Way to Improve Patient Comfort: Onset® Precision Anesthesia

462389477Local anesthesia is a vital and commonly used tool in dental treatment, allowing oral healthcare professionals to perform a variety of services without causing patient discomfort. The initial sting of anesthesia as it is administered, however, is still a frequent complaint from patients of all ages; no one likes the feel of a needle or waiting for minutes at a time to become fully numb. Fortunately, patients of Dr. Ted R. Hume, III no longer need to fear the pain commonly associated with local injections. With the revolutionary pH buffering technology of the Onset® anesthetic device, it is now possible to administer local anesthesia quickly, accurately, and with less discomfort than ever before.

What are the Benefits of Onset® Precision Buffering?

For decades, dentists and oral healthcare researchers have searched for a way to administer painless dental injections in order to better serve the needs of their patients. At Dr. Hume’s Dallas dental office, you and your family can now find just that. With Onset® precision anesthesia buffering, patients receive the exact amount of local numbing agent they need without the pinching sting typically associated with the initial injection.

Onset® effectively alters the pH level of the anesthetic, reducing its acidity and eliminating the pain so many patients actively fear. In addition, the anesthesia goes to work immediately rather than taking multiple minutes to kick in. This means that Dr. Hume and his team can get to work right away; your level of comfort is consistently monitored and you spend less time waiting in the dental chair. Even patients with active infections report painless relief in mere seconds with Onset® precision buffering, and now you can enjoy the same benefits.

Sleep Apnea Therapy: What You Need to Know from Dr. Ted R. Hume

shutterstock_165362660According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, approximately 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a common condition that has only recently been fully recognized as a potentially life threatening disorder. At Ted R. Hume III, DDS in Dallas, TX, Dr. Ted Hume and his caring, experienced team offer a variety of general and preventive dentistry services, including the treatment and management of obstructive sleep apnea.

The Importance of Sleep Apnea Therapy

While excessively loud snoring is the chief complaint associated with obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, this annoying nighttime nuisance is not the most serious of the condition’s complications. In fact, individuals with untreated sleep apnea are at an increased risk of developing numerous health conditions, including high blood pressure, pulmonary hypertension, chronic daytime fatigue, atrial fibrillation, depression, and stroke.

Sleep apnea is characterized by frequent lapses in breathing while a patient sleeps, though the majority of those affected are unaware that they are struggling for oxygen throughout the course of the night. The muscles that support the soft tissues of the throat and mouth block the airway, preventing air movement into the lungs, and thereby decreasing oxygen levels in the blood.  Fortunately, an effective solution exists for this common problem.   This treatment has been proven effective in millions of OSA cases.  A custom oral appliance is fabricated for the patient to wear at night while sleeping.  Please ask Dr. Hume about how a comfortable, custom mouthpiece can help you avoid the complications associated with sleep apnea.
