April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month: Schedule Your Screening Today

ThinkstockPhotos-178361153Every year, approximately 43,250 men and women in America will be diagnosed with oral cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease. In fact, statistics show that oral cancer takes a life about once every hour, around the clock. Fortunately, early detection and treatment can substantially improve a patient’s chances of surviving the disease. That is why Dr. Hume and his team emphasize the importance of oral cancer screening – not only in April, but all year round.

Risk Factors & Symptoms of Oral Cancer

It is important to understand your risk for oral cancer as well as what to look for when examining the soft tissues of your mouth. The following is a list of some of the most common risk factors:

  • Tobacco use – Approximately 80 percent of people with cancer of the oral cavity smoke cigarettes or use chewing tobacco.
  • Heavy alcohol consumption – About 70 percent of oral cancer cases are in people who drink often.
  • HPV infection – The human papilloma virus, or HPV, has been shown to increase the risk of developing cancerous lesions in the mouth.
  • Certain genetic syndromes – These include fanconi anemia and dyskeratosis congenital

Symptoms of oral cancer are often so minor at first that patients are unaware of the problem until it becomes serious. The following are common symptoms associated with oral cancer:

  • A sore that does not heal after two weeks
  • A lump or thickening of tissue anywhere in the mouth
  • Numbness or tingling of the tongue or other soft tissues
  • Pain in the jaw and/or difficulty chewing
  • Persistent cough or hoarseness
  • Loosening teeth or a change in the way dentures fit
  • Difficulty moving the tongue
  • A feeling like something is stuck in the throat
  • White or red patch on the tonsils, tongue, gums, or cheek lining

Only a comprehensive exam and oral cancer screening with Dr. Hume can definitively determine whether or not a lesion or sore is a cause for concern. During your screening, we will check for any signs of the symptoms listed above as well as earlier indicators that may be impossible to see yourself.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Life

If it has been more than one year since your last oral cancer screening, there’s never been a better time to schedule your next one with Dr. Hume and his dedicated team. Why is Treating Gum Disease So Important? Periodontal Therapy in Dallas, TX

185594294Gum disease is among the most prevalent chronic health conditions in America, affecting approximately 64.7 million adults aged 30 or older. While most people know that gum disease can cause sensitivity, bad breath, and bleeding following brushing or flossing, there are even more serious complications than the majority of Americans realize. At the Dallas, TX office of Dr. Ted Hume, our team is committed to helping our patients better understand the ways oral health affects overall wellness. This includes the link between periodontal disease and other serious health concerns.

The Mouth Body Connection

When the infectious bacteria that cause gum disease are allowed to travel throughout the blood stream, other tissues and organs are compromised in a variety of ways. Research has proven a connection between periodontal disease and the following health complications:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Preeclampsia in pregnant women
  • Diabetes
  • Respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia
  • Dementia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Certain types of cancer, including cancer of the blood and/or pancreas

Fortunately, periodontal therapy and improved home hygiene have been shown to reduce the risk of these potentially life-threatening conditions. Dr. Hume and his caring team want to help you not only improve your oral health, but your general health as well. Though there is no absolute cure for periodontal disease, effective management is possible.

Healthy Smile, Healthy Body

If you suspect that you may be suffering from gum disease, there’s never been a better time to schedule a visit with Dr. Hume and take the first step toward improved oral health. Why Are Denture Wearers Switching to Dental Implants? Implant-Retained Dentures

78769905For millions of edentulous Americans, traditional dentures make eating, speaking, and smiling possible; for many, however, dentures are uncomfortable, bulky, and cause more problems than they solve. Fortunately, there is a solution that allows you to enjoy the full benefits of a complete set of teeth without the worry of slipping, ill-fitting dentures: implant-retained dentures from Ted R. Hume, III, DDS. Conveniently located in Dallas, TX, our practice offers a wide range of personalized restorative dentistry services, including implant-retained dentures.

Advantages of Implant-Retained Dentures

Traditional dentures are held in place using denture adhesive and/or natural suction. Over time, however, the bone that comprises the jaw begins to deteriorate and change shape. This leads to improper fit and, very often, considerable discomfort for the patient. Chewing becomes difficult, and a slipping denture can lead to gagging as well as embarrassment in social situations.

With implant-retained dentures, however, your custom arch of replacement teeth is securely held in its proper place with sturdy dental implants, each of which is anchored within the jaw bone. The result is a smile that looks beautifully natural and a bite that is as strong as your natural teeth would be. Denture wearers who have abstained from their favorite foods for years are thrilled to bite into an apple again, to enjoy chewing meat like pork and steak. In addition to vastly improving stability of your denture, your dental implants actively help keep your jaw bone strong, visually improving your facial contours for years to come.

Schedule Your Dental Implants Consultation

Would you like to explore your restorative dentistry options in an environment that caters specifically to your unique needs? Dr. Hume is here to help. Our state-of-the-art practice warmly welcomes patients from throughout the DFW Metroplex, including Frisco, Richardson, Addison, Plano, Garland, University Park, North Dallas, and beyond.

How Does Running Affect Your Oral Health? Dental Tips for Athletes

451855347It’s common knowledge that exercising regularly is essential for a healthy body and mind, but do you know how your trips to the gym are affecting the health of your smile? The link between your teeth and your fitness regimen may not be immediately apparent, but a recent study published in a Scandinavian scientific journal uncovered an important relationship that is of particular interest to athletes. At Ted R. Hume, III, DDS in Dallas, TX, Dr. Ted Hume and his team are always searching for new ways to help our patients. We’d like to take this opportunity to share the findings of this study in hopes that it will be useful in your journey toward optimal oral health.

Exercise and Tooth Decay: Why Runners Have More Cavities

Previously conducted studies on the subject of oral health in athletes discovered that men and women who ran regularly suffered from a higher incidence of tooth decay as compared to their non-athletic counterparts. While a diet high in carbohydrates (think sports drinks and energy bars) had already been revealed as a major cause of cavities in athletes, the researchers found something new in this study. It was the saliva collected from the participants that really brought the surprising results.

Saliva samples were taken from two groups: non-athletes and regular runners. When both groups were at rest, their samples showed no difference. When the athletes were sent out on a strenuous run, however, the environment in their mouths changed. Saliva production was diminished as they ran, putting their teeth and gums at risk for decay and disease. Choosing carbonated or sugary refreshments following the run made matters worse, eroding tooth enamel at a faster rate than would normally occur. The results of the study point toward more stringent preventive dental care for men and women who work out often, particularly runners.

Dental Care for Athletes in Dallas, TX

Though we would never suggest that any of our patients abstain from a healthy amount of exercise, we do like to remind our athletic patients that their teeth and gums require special care. If you are concerned that your fitness regimen is negatively affecting your oral health, please contact us today to schedule your visit with Dr. Hume and our experienced, caring staff. We can help you protect your smile from the most common dental health issues, including periodontal disease and tooth decay. Conveniently located in Dallas, TX, our practice warmly welcomes families from the surrounding communities in the DFW Metroplex, including those in Plano, Frisco, Garland, Richardson, North Dallas, University Park, and more.

Get the Most for Your Money: Use Your Dental Benefits Before They Expire!

513884757If you’re like most Americans, a portion of your hard-earned money goes to dental insurance premiums every month. As the end of the year approaches, it’s important to make sure that you make the most of your benefits before time runs out. At the Dallas, TX dental office of Dr. Ted R. Hume, III, our team would like to offer you a friendly reminder to take advantage of those benefits before they expire at the end of the year.

Maximize Your Dental Benefits with Dr. Hume

Most of us are familiar with the phrase “Use it or lose it.” This saying is especially applicable to dental insurance benefits. Most policies feature a yearly maximum; this is the highest amount of dental work that your plan covers annually (the average is approximately $1,000 per person each year). In the majority of cases, this amount resets at the end of the year, meaning that unused benefits are forfeited.

Another reason to use your dental insurance benefits before your plan resets concerns your deductible. Your deductible is the amount of out-of-pocket money you must pay before your policy kicks in and starts to cover your treatment. At the end of the year, the plan resets and you are required to pay your deductible again before your insurance starts to pay. If you’ve already paid your deductible but haven’t been back to the dentist, your paid benefits are actively going to waste.

The end of the year is a great time to visit your local Dallas dentist for a general checkup, a thorough exam, and a professional cleaning. Start the New Year off right when you utilize your dental benefits to their maximum potential.

Schedule Your Visit Today

As 2014 quickly comes to a close, there’s never been a better time to make an appointment with Dr. Hume and his caring, experienced team. Get the quality dental care you need and deserve at Ted R. Hume III, DDS, and put those dental insurance benefits to good use. Our state-of-the-art Dallas, TX dental practice warmly welcomes patients from throughout the DFW Metroplex, including Plano, Frisco, Garland, North Dallas, University Park, Addison, and more.

Introducing a Better Way to Improve Patient Comfort: Onset® Precision Anesthesia

462389477Local anesthesia is a vital and commonly used tool in dental treatment, allowing oral healthcare professionals to perform a variety of services without causing patient discomfort. The initial sting of anesthesia as it is administered, however, is still a frequent complaint from patients of all ages; no one likes the feel of a needle or waiting for minutes at a time to become fully numb. Fortunately, patients of Dr. Ted R. Hume, III no longer need to fear the pain commonly associated with local injections. With the revolutionary pH buffering technology of the Onset® anesthetic device, it is now possible to administer local anesthesia quickly, accurately, and with less discomfort than ever before.

What are the Benefits of Onset® Precision Buffering?

For decades, dentists and oral healthcare researchers have searched for a way to administer painless dental injections in order to better serve the needs of their patients. At Dr. Hume’s Dallas dental office, you and your family can now find just that. With Onset® precision anesthesia buffering, patients receive the exact amount of local numbing agent they need without the pinching sting typically associated with the initial injection.

Onset® effectively alters the pH level of the anesthetic, reducing its acidity and eliminating the pain so many patients actively fear. In addition, the anesthesia goes to work immediately rather than taking multiple minutes to kick in. This means that Dr. Hume and his team can get to work right away; your level of comfort is consistently monitored and you spend less time waiting in the dental chair. Even patients with active infections report painless relief in mere seconds with Onset® precision buffering, and now you can enjoy the same benefits.

Schedule Your Visit with Dr. Hume Today
